THE SLEEPING BERRY
Ashwagandha roughly translates from ancient Indian Sanskrit as "smell of a horse". This name may be based on ancient beliefs that the Ashwagandha plant gives its user the energy and strength of a wild horse. Ashwagandha originally comes from Asia and Africa and has been used in countries such as Pakistan and Egypt for thousands of years due to its good tolerability and plays an important role in the traditional Indian healing art of Ayurveda.
ASHWAGANDHA IN EUROPE
The berry plant has long been grown as a household remedy in Europe. In our latitudes, Ashwagandha is best known as winter cherry ( Withania somnifera) or horse root. Another name for the medicinal plant is Indian ginseng, to distinguish it from ginseng, which comes from China and is also medicinal . Health-conscious people can buy Ashwagandha as a seedling in many well-stocked garden centers. Of course, it is also possible to buy Ashwagandha seeds and plant them in a bed at home. The plant, which grows to a height of between 30 and 150 centimeters, is relatively undemanding, but likes it sunny and dry and cannot tolerate frost. For this reason, it is grown as an annual plant in European gardens. As soon as it bears fruit, the plant's calyx becomes spherical or egg-shaped. Now the root is also ripe for harvesting.
INGREDIENTS OF ASHWAGANDHA ROOT
The most important ingredients of Ashwagandha roots include various alkaloids and withanolides. These are natural, organic compounds. Traditionally, leaves, roots and root bark are taken from the Indian ginseng and powdered into extracts or processed into teas. Ashwagandha is enjoying growing popularity in our latitudes.
