Another active ingredient, isovaleric acid, is responsible for the plant's scent, which cats reportedly love but humans less appreciate. Some studies suggest that these compounds may interact with natural messengers in the nervous system, such as GABA, the neurotransmitter gamma-aminobutyric acid, but the exact mechanisms have not yet been fully understood.
