What is alpha-lipoic acid?
Alpha-lipoic acid – also known as thioctic acid, α-lipoic acid, or LA – is a sulfur-containing compound that acts as a coenzyme in the human body. It is naturally active in the mitochondria, the powerhouses of our cells, and is required for the body's own energy production.
Particularly noteworthy: Alpha-lipoic acid is both water- and fat-soluble. This allows it to penetrate cell membranes, act in various tissues, and even cross the blood-brain barrier.
Especially interesting: It can regenerate other antioxidants such as vitamin C, vitamin E, coenzyme Q10, and glutathione. This means: Alpha-lipoic acid enhances the overall antioxidant capacity in the body and is therefore one of the strongest antioxidants.
Where is alpha-lipoic acid found?
Alpha-lipoic acid is naturally found in small amounts in foods, especially in animal sources, and in smaller amounts in some vegetables:
- Liver
- Heart
- Kidneys
- Tomatoes
- Spinach
- Broccoli
Since the body's own production decreases with age, additional intake is beneficial. Alpha-lipoic acid is available in tablets, capsules - also as a high-dose medicine.
Alpha-lipoic acid and its application
In Germany, alpha-lipoic acid is particularly often used in connection with the following areas:
- Protection of the liver from oxidative stress
- Support for diabetic polyneuropathy
- Promotion of nerve and brain function
- Help with Mitochondrial dysfunction (e.g., in Fatigue Syndrome)
- Blood sugar regulation in type 2 diabetes
Thanks to its versatile properties, alpha-lipoic acid is a central component in modern micronutrient medicine for the prevention and support of chronic diseases.
Alpha-lipoic acid in diabetes
Around ten percent of diabetics suffer from type 1 diabetes, usually from childhood. In type 2 diabetes – the more common form – alpha-lipoic acid can play a supportive role.
Alpha-lipoic acid has a number of positive effects on sugar metabolism:
It improves insulin sensitivity, supports the cells' energy production from glucose, and can contribute to normalizing blood sugar levels.
Furthermore, alpha-lipoic acid is mentioned in studies as promising for the prevention of complications in diabetes – such as cardiovascular diseases, polyneuropathy, or cataracts.
It can also help to compensate for the often low glutathione levels in diabetics.
The German Diabetes Association therefore recommends alpha-lipoic acid as a therapeutic option, particularly for diabetic polyneuropathy.
Alpha-lipoic acid for brain, liver & energy
Thanks to its ability to cross the blood-brain barrier, alpha-lipoic acid also protects the brain.
It improves blood circulation to nerve endings, supports impulse transmission, and is used for neurological complaints.
In addition, it plays a key role in liver health:
Alpha-lipoic acid promotes the breakdown of toxins and protects the liver from fatty degeneration and oxidative damage.
Alpha-lipoic acid is also being researched for chronic fatigue syndrome (fatigue) because it could positively influence the disturbed energy metabolism.

Alpha-lipoic acid and liver health in diabetes
Alpha-lipoic acid shows strong hepatoprotective, anti-inflammatory, and metabolism-regulating effects. The substance is therefore considered promising for supporting fatty liver (NAFLD) and diabetes complications.

Alpha-lipoic acid and fat metabolism in the liver
Alpha-lipoic acid promotes fat burning in the liver by stimulating the formation of the enzyme ATGL (Adipose Triglyceride Lipase). At the same time, the storage of fat in liver cells is reduced, which indicates improved lipolysis and metabolic regulation. The results suggest promising potential for support in non-alcoholic fatty liver (NAFLD).

In addition, research discusses whether alpha-lipoic acid can contribute to the prevention of age-related diseases, as it also acts as an antioxidant in the brain and can cross the blood-brain barrier.
