        – for young and old

Your body consists of approximately 100 trillion cells. For you to be fit, vital, and productive, they all need to be supplied with energy in the form of nutrients. Folic acid, a B vitamin, is an important component of your cells. Folic acid plays a role in cell division and supports normal blood formation. It also contributes to normal homocysteine metabolism and normal psychological functions.

        Folic acid in food

Since folic acid is water-soluble and is lost from food through washing, cooking and storage, it is particularly useful to obtain it through raw foods, gently steamed vegetables and, if necessary, through dietary supplements.

        You ask – we answer

What is folic acid? What is folic acid?

Folic acidis one of the water-soluble vitamins of the B complex and owes its name to the Latin word for leaf (folium). As so-called folate, it is found in green plant leaves. Folic acid was also known in older forms as vitamin B9 or B11. According to the German Nutrition Society (DGE), the daily requirement for an adult is 300 µg; the average German only consumes 200 µg of folate per day through their diet. Although the B vitamin is found in green leafy vegetables, liver, and yeast, it is very sensitive to heat. Prolonged soaking, cooking, and storage of foods should be avoided. Your body cannot produce folic acid itself and must obtain the vitamin from food. You need the B vitamin for normal cell division, blood formation, and healthy growth processes. In addition, folic acid, together with vitamin B12, regulates homocysteine metabolism.

Which foods contain a lot of folic acid?Which foods contain a lot of folic acid?

Significant amounts of folate are found primarily in green vegetables such as spinach, Brussels sprouts, broccoli, and peas. Asparagus, soybeans, whole grain products, wheat bran, yeast, and liver also provide you with folic acid.

The German Nutrition Society (DGE) recommends a daily intake of folic acid (calculated in so-called folate equivalents) for

        • For pregnant women: 550 micrograms
        • For breastfeeding women: 450 micrograms.

In addition to a folate-rich diet, women who are planning or may become pregnant should take 400 µg of synthetic folic acid supplementation to prevent neural tube defects. This supplement should be used for at least one month before and up to three months after conception.
