"Fire cider" is also known as fire wine and is, of course, made with apple cider vinegar, which is known for its health benefits (digestion). You can make apple cider vinegar yourself, but it takes time. However, we didn't want to wait a month, so we conjured up a hot wellness shot ourselves using easily available ingredients. Based on the original formula by Rosemary Gladstar. Ready in just 15 minutes.
What is fire cider?
Fire ciders are vibrant, spicy, strong (oh yes), and delicious too! They also stimulate digestion and warm you from the inside out, no matter the time of year, but are especially ideal for the winter season, when your immune system needs an extra boost.
Fire cider is a spicy vinegar tonic that was popularized by herbalist Rosemary Gladstar in the 1980s. It is known for its ability to support the immune system and fight colds, the flu, and other infections.
Gladstar's original recipe contains apple cider vinegar, garlic, onions, horseradish, ginger, hot peppers (cayenne pepper), and sometimes turmeric or echinacea. The combination is steeped for weeks to allow the flavors to develop.

The quick fire cider
We decided on organic apple cider vinegar and lime, sweet pineapple and honey, anti-inflammatory turmeric powder already mixed with pepper, combined with spicy ginger, garlic, and cayenne pepper. Horseradish is optional for those who like it even spicier.
Since we blend the mixture instead of steeping it, the beneficial properties are absorbed into the vinegar in seconds. After blending, we pour everything through a fine-mesh sieve to remove the pulp.
The result is a powerful, spicy, and soothing shot that keeps in the refrigerator for weeks.
This drink is the perfect tonic for cold weather, during cold and flu season, and also works as an aperitif to promote digestion before meals!
15-minute fire cider
PREPARATION TIME
15 minutes
Servings
16 (1-tablespoon servings)
Lactose-free, Gluten-free
Shelf life 4-6 weeks
Ingredients
- 160 ml raw, unfiltered organic apple cider vinegar
- 120 ml chopped fresh pineapple
- Ginger root, 1 piece, fresh and peeled
- Horseradish root, 1 piece, fresh and peeled (optional)
- 1 large clove of garlic, peeled
- 1/4 small lime (with zest if organically grown // approx. 20 g)
- 1 ½ tablespoons raw organic honey
- 1/2-3/4 teaspoon ground turmeric
- 1 pinch ground black pepper, also known as piperine
- 1/8 teaspoon ground cayenne pepper
Preparation
Wash and prepare the fresh ingredients (pineapple, ginger, garlic, and lime). Place all ingredients (apple cider vinegar, pineapple, ginger, horseradish (optional), garlic, lime, honey, turmeric, black pepper, and cayenne pepper) into a high-speed blender. Blend on the highest setting for 30-45 seconds or until no large pieces remain. If you don't have a high-performance blender, this may take longer. Pour through a fine-mesh sieve into a measuring cup or bowl, using the back of a wooden spoon to press down on the pulp and stir to extract all the liquid. Discard the remaining pulp. You should now have a nice, orange-colored tonic without any clumps. Taste it and adjust as needed by adding more honey for sweetness, turmeric for an earthy note, or cayenne pepper for heat – it should taste spicy and fiery!
Drink as desired.
We love the tonic as a shot before meals to stimulate digestion. You can also stir it into salad dressings, marinades, or cocktails, or you can add it to carbonated water as a mocktail. Store in a glass bottle or jar in the refrigerator for up to 4-6 weeks. Always shake well before serving, as the ingredients may separate.
