For ten years, 4,807 subjects in the Rotterdam Heart Study tested the effects of taking vitamin K2. The scientists concluded that this vitamin, chemically known as menaquinone, is important for the prevention of cardiovascular diseases.
Vitamin K2 is good for the heart
The reason for this has to do with a specific protein, the so-called matrix Gla protein. This protein is formed in the liver with the help of vitamin K2. Matrix Gla protein ensures that blood vessels do not calcify. Deposits on the vessel walls are caused, among other things, by calcium. Thus, with the help of this vitamin, the mineral calcium can be removed from the blood and incorporated into bones and teeth, which is where it is needed.
Good for the bones
Vitamin K2 is also particularly important for bone formation. It activates the hormone osteocalcin in bone metabolism. This ensures that calcium can be incorporated into the bones. Menaquinone thus fulfills an important dual function in the body: it strengthens heart and bone functions.
