Unfortunately, we usually only realize how important smoothly functioning joints are when problems arise. Suddenly, our motor skills become less supple, and we adopt protective postures to avoid pain during certain movements. This only exacerbates the problem. Adequate exercise is important to stimulate the metabolism and prevent the adverse effects of protective postures. But why do joint problems occur so frequently? Over the years, the body's ability to supply the joint cartilage with sufficient nutrients diminishes. Overuse, obesity, lack of exercise, and an unbalanced diet can also play a role.

Poorly supplied cartilage "dries out," becomes cracked, and eventually atrophies. Sufficient cartilage is needed for joints to move smoothly. This acts as a shock absorber between the bones, preventing them from rubbing against each other, becoming inflamed, and ultimately losing mobility. This also affects the muscles, as protective postures can cause the affected muscles to shorten over time. Synovial fluid is crucial for healthy cartilage. It not only acts as a protective lubricant but also supplies the cartilage with nutrients such as glucosamine. It also transports waste products from the highly complex joint system.

What exactly is glucosamine? What exactly is glucosamine?

Glucosamineis an amino sugar naturally occurring in the human body. As a component of connective tissue, cartilage, and synovial fluid, it plays a key role in the elasticity of joint cartilage. The body produces glucosamine by combining fructose-6-phosphate with the amino acid glutamine. With advancing age—but also due to stress or excess weight—glucosamine production can decrease, promoting wear and tear of joint cartilage and joint pain. Although cartilage has no blood supply, it forms a living, regularly renewing tissue. Building materials reach the cartilage via the synovial fluid, which is distributed particularly well through movement.

What exactly is chondroitin? What exactly is chondroitin?

ChondroitinChemically, it belongs to the group of sulfated glycosaminoglycans. Chondroitin forms part of the extracellular matrix and, along with collagen, is one of the main components of human cartilage tissue. It gives cartilage its resistance to compression. This macromolecule is formed by chondroblasts, the cells that produce cartilage.

What exactly are omega-3 fatty acids? What exactly are omega-3 fatty acids?

Omega-3 fatty acids are so-called unsaturated compounds and form a subgroup within the omega-3 fatty acids family. They are essential substances that cannot be produced by the body and must therefore be ingested through food. Omega-3 fatty acids have many positive effects on the body. For example, they influence the synthesis of anti-inflammatory prostaglandins, which also benefits the joints.
