Mirror of the soul: How stress affects the skin
A single glance at a person’s face is often enough to gauge how they are feeling. This is because the signals sent by the skin can literally be read: whether someone is happy or ashamed shows in a slight blush. Chronic rashes with pustules or red patches, for example, can be caused by intense inner tension. The skin is the mirror of the soul. You can generally tell how you are doing and whether you have strong nerves by looking at your skin. High levels of stress in your daily life and at work can contribute to hormonal changes in the body, which in turn can trigger inflammation of the skin. It was once assumed that our nerve cells only reached the edge of the skin. Today, we know they are even present in the epidermis, our topmost layer of skin. This manifests itself in the form of small pimples, redness, or, in severe cases, serious eczema. It is therefore crucial to find the right balance between daily duties and necessary breaks.
Valerian & hops for a good night's sleep and strong nerves
Healthy sleep in particular should not be underestimated in this regard. Unfortunately, stress makes it difficult to fall asleep and stay asleep, leading to even more stress. Experts recommend a nightly resting phase of about eight hours to have enough energy for the next day. But it is not always easy to unwind in the evening, because the brain and body do not obey commands. Valerian and hops can have a calming effect during times of restlessness. When combined, they are more effective at soothing the mind.
Strong nerves thanks to Rhodiola
So-called adaptogens like Rhodiola can also mildly and specifically increase stress tolerance. Rhodiola, or Rhodiola rosea in Latin, is traditionally used in Chinese medicine to combat fatigue and has shown a positive effect on symptoms of exhaustion in several studies. This effect is particularly observed in connection with negative stress (distress) and overwork. In the brain, Rhodiola promotes an increase in the "happiness hormone" serotonin. It can therefore have a positive effect on mood, support stress management, provide more relaxation, and reduce symptoms of depression or burnout. Taking Rhodiola for negative stress is best done over a longer period. It can also be taken in a higher dose for acute situations.
Don't rely solely on plants for strong nerves
Herbal aids help you become calmer, but taking medicinal herbs is usually not enough on its own. You should identify the stressors in your daily life and either reshape the corresponding situations or change your attitude towards them. This can be a long and complex process in which you learn a lot about yourself. On this journey, you can support the "power of plants" with active relaxation exercises, such as yoga, autogenic training, muscle relaxation, mindfulness practices, and meditation. You gradually train your body to switch off and "come down" more easily. You should also gradually let go of the tendency to ruminate, as it will eventually weaken even originally strong nerves. The positive side effect: energy, calm, and balance result in an improved complexion, freshness, and an overall positive radiance.
