The Incas already revered Sacha Inchi as a sacred plant. The oil extracted from the seeds of the Sacha Inchi nut is of the greatest importance, as it is considered the highest-quality plant oil in the world due to its components.
Sacha Inchi originates from the Peruvian Amazon, but today it is also cultivated in the tropical forests of Southeast Asia, such as Thailand. The vine grows up to 3 m tall, requires plenty of water and high temperatures, and can even grow up to the mountain plateaus of the Andes if there is sufficient moisture. The fruit consists of 5 to 6 chambers, each containing one seed. As the plant itself is threatened, ecological projects have been launched to enable the indigenous population of Peru to engage in sustainable cultivation and to meet the increasing demand.
Oil from Sacha Inchi
The oil extracted from Sacha Inchi nuts is a true superfood. It has a nutty, fruity taste and is well-suited for refining dishes. Cold pressing preserves all fatty acids and nutrients, and Sacha Inchi is abundant in these—more so than any other plant oil. In Peru, the oil is used not only for culinary purposes but also as a cosmetic. Furthermore, it is used externally for rheumatic complaints or applied to muscle injuries.
Components and Effects
With over 90% unsaturated fatty acids, Sacha Inchi is rich in nutrients and is considered one of the best oils in the world. Approximately 48% consists of omega-3 fatty acids (alpha-linolenic acid), approximately 35% of omega-6 fatty acids (linoleic acid), and approximately 9% of omega-9 fatty acids (oleic acid). Sacha Inchi oil is among the plants with the highest omega-3 content. In addition, it provides vitamins A and E. The seeds supply high-quality proteins, minerals such as calcium and magnesium, as well as dietary fiber. The balanced combination of omega-3, -6, and -9 fatty acids makes an important contribution to the intake of essential unsaturated fatty acids. Mono- and polyunsaturated fatty acids, as found in Sacha Inchi oil, support the cardiovascular system and normalize cholesterol levels.
By the way: When taken as an oil, a single spoonful is enough to cover the daily requirement for unsaturated fatty acids. It is easily digestible.
