Many people know borage primarily as a savory herb in the famous Frankfurt Green Sauce. However, the plant, also known as "cucumber herb," is not only suitable for seasoning delicate salads, drinks, and soups. Borage also possesses interesting properties for beautiful skin and shiny hair.
The spice and medicinal plant, which can grow up to 80 centimeters tall, actually originates from North Africa and West Asia. Since the late Middle Ages, however, borage (Borago officinalis) has also been found in Central Europe. It is spread primarily by ants. They carry the plant's seeds to their nest, consume the protein body contained within (elaiosome), and carry the seeds back out into the open.
What's in borage
Borage contains tannins and saponins, among other things. The seeds are rich in unsaturated fatty acids, especially linoleic acid and gamma-linolenic acid. Of all natural sources, borage oil has the highest content of this fatty acid. In addition, the plant contains certain alkaloids that are considered toxic. These are found primarily in the herb and flowers of the borage plant. Therefore, prolonged use of borage herb and flowers is not recommended. On the other hand, there are no objections to taking borage seed oil even over a longer period of time.
An underestimated beauty herb
The gamma-linolenic acid (GLA) from the seeds is a structural component of human skin that stimulates skin metabolism and promotes the renewal of skin cells. GLA also supports the formation of anti-inflammatory and antispasmodic substances in the body and strengthens the immune system. Borage oil is primarily used for brittle skin or for neurodermatitis or psoriasis, as these conditions involve a deficiency of GLA due to an enzyme defect. In mild forms of acne, GLA is used due to its anti-inflammatory properties. Some health practitioners also recommend taking borage oil supplements for rheumatoid arthritis. Sensitive skin in particular benefits from the ingredients of borage seeds.
