Time to calm down! That is usually easier said than done. Especially when you are already stressed, it is hard to take good care of yourself. After all, where are you supposed to find the calm, energy, and confidence for an extensive meditation session, forest bathing, or a yoga class right now? Here, you will learn a few very simple tricks that will help you calm down in everyday life and cost you hardly more than a minute.
Eat an apple, drink a glass of water
As simple as it sounds: to calm down, it can sometimes be enough to consciously drink a glass of water or eat an apple. If you manage to forget about the stress for even just a few seconds while doing so, you have likely already escaped the spiral. It can help if you stand up and perhaps even open a window to treat yourself to a few breaths of fresh air. Apples are low in calories, packed with vitamin C, and stimulate the growth of healthy gut bacteria. The fiber in the apple also keeps you full longer and, combined with the fruit sugar, makes this popular fruit a great snack for the afternoon slump.
Mini-meditation to calm down
To switch off a little and free yourself from stressful loops of thought, you do not necessarily need a lengthy meditation. Often, it is enough to consciously sit up straight, close your eyes fully or halfway, and focus on your breathing in a relaxed way, without pressure, for one minute. It is helpful if you change your location, meaning you should not perform your mini-meditation where you were just feeling stressed. Also helpful: a scented oil to stimulate your senses and thus break out of unproductive thought circles.
Calming down means turning off the news feed
Constantly reading bad news can push your stress levels through the roof, which in turn affects our immune system. In this regard, you should really try to calm down—or not get worked up in the first place. Taking a quick look at the headlines once or twice a day is enough. This may also apply to your email programs and social media, which drain more mental energy than one thinks—and more than one initially notices. You likely do not always need to be reachable, and you can create fixed times during which you are neither available by phone nor otherwise. If your self-discipline is not enough, you can install free blockers for Facebook and the like. Our 1-minute wellness tip in a nutshell: Just don't do it!
